SHAMY Garden Status - 2014-07-06

Jess and I took some time off and headed to Scotland for 9 days.  Over this time, no garden photos were taken so there's a two week gap between status posts.

Here's the latest state of our SHAMY Garden as of July 6th...

The "Lappins" Cherry Tree... the poor Lappins fell victim to the Silver Leaf Maple tree removal.  It got run over by a truck and had to be re-transplanted a second time.  The double transplant shock might have been too much for it when combined with the short roots it was shipped with.  We'll keep nursing it in the hopes it recovers.  At this point, all green is dead though.

The "Stella" Cherry Tree... spreading nicely.

The "Stark Gold" Cherry Tree

The "Priscilla" Apple Tree

The "Empire" Apple Tree

The "Honey Crisp" Apple Tree

The "Olympic Giant" Asian Pear Tree

The "Honeysweet" Pear Tree

The #1 "Heritage" Red Raspberry Bush... a critter ate the young sprout!

The #2 "Heritage" Red Raspberry Bush

The #3 "Heritage" Red Raspberry Bush

The #3 "Heritage" Red Raspberry Bush... the FIRST fruit changing color!

The #4 "Heritage" Red Raspberry Bush

Garden Bed #1 - Tomatoes are way overgrown!  Additionally, the tomatoes have shaded out the carrots and onions so this is now basically a pure tomato bed.  I pruned up about a foot from the soil and all the wild side shoots, but it looks like we're going to have to top these as well.

Garden Bed #1 - First tomato ripening.

Garden Bed #1 - Beefsteak tomatoes getting big!

Garden Bed #2 - Spinach, Lettuce and herbs.

Garden Bed #3 - Broccoli... the cabbage worm has been destructive in this bed.

Garden Bed #3 - Broccoli... finally forming heads!

Garden Bed #4 - Tomato, Onion, Carrot... the carrots are growing well.

Garden Bed #4 - Onions (top) are growing out of the soil.  I'm not sure this is normal, but I think it's due to our soil being so loose.  Carrots (bottom right) are getting big too.

Garden Bed #5 - Potatoes - the potatoes have fallen over and new shoots have appeared in the void space.

Garden Bed #6 - Corn & Soy Beans

Garden Bed #6 - The poor corn.  We had a tornado touch down about a mile away and the winds blew the entire bed flat.  The corn seems to be picking back up though.

Garden Bed #6 - The good news is that the first corn is forming!

Garden Bed #7 - Corn & Beans... after six weeks' growth, the beans are still outpacing the corn.  The beans actually vined so heavily at the top that it grew a canopy.  I had to top the bean stalks to allow the center corn space and light for growth.  We'll have to see how this turns out, but bush beans may be preferred over pole beans in the future.

Garden Bed #7 - The first pole bean blossoms appearing.

Blueberry Container #1 - Sweetheart... it looks like the blueberries are having sun issues.  We may have to move their location to allow for more sunshine.

Blueberry Container #2 - Blueray

Blueberry Container #3 - Chandler

Blueberry Container #4 - Sweetheart... leaves turning brown again.

Blueberry Container #5 - Blueray

Blueberry Container #6 - Chandler

The "Mars" Grapevine #1... with the new mulched bed and EMT trellis in place, starting side vine training.

The "Mars" Grapevine #2... with the new mulched bed and EMT trellis in place, starting side vine training.

The "Mars" Grapevine #3... with the new mulched bed and EMT trellis in place, starting side vine training.

I have declared the Black Raspberry bushes as dead.  They never sprouted any greenery since delivery and planting.  If something pops out later, I'll note it, but for now, the black raspberries was a failure. :-(

The Asparagus Bed... oh so very, very happy plants!  We'll be feasting on Asparagus next year for sure!

The Strawberry Bed... initial harvest over, but continuous blossoms and fruit expected throughout the season.

The "Pope John Paul II" Rose Bush

The "Wild Blue Yonder" Rose Bush

The "Mister Lincoln" Rose Bush

The "Margaret Merrill" Rose Bush

The "Sweet Afton" Rose Bush

The "Wenlock" Rose Bush

We identified the Aphids problem with the roses.  They decimated the rose bushes, but we sprayed Cold Pressed Neem Oil and it looks like it's helping.
